I’d see the puffins from shore, with solid ground beneath my feet, thankyouverymuch. It's the only puffin species found in the Atlantic Ocean its close relatives the Tufted Puffin and Horned Puffin occur only in the Pacific.

Nope, this time I was going to be smarter. The Atlantic Puffin is a small seabird, only a bit larger than a Mourning Dove, but it's heavy for its size, weighing just over a pound about the same weight as a full beverage can. Add in the bobbing of a boat, up and down, up and down, and it’s that much harder (and that’s assuming you don’t make yourself seasick). In flight, these birds are fast and keeping them in a narrow field of vision is challenging. That trip happened to be in Maine and I distinctly recall how difficult it was to focus on a puffin through my binoculars. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. And boy, do I remember the last time I went puffin watching on a boat. Puffins are any of three species of small alcids (auks) in the bird genus Fratercula. Tufted puffins have no white plumage but still have the same white face and brightly coloured beak. Puffins are one of a small number of bird species able to carry fish crosswise in their beaks. Adult size and weight is dependant on the species. But to see them there, you’ll have to get on a boat. Puffins are small seabirds, with males slightly larger than females.
